Red Ginger

7 x 5 inches - oil on gessoboard - This is a common plant in Hawaii, especially around the resorts.

Tree at Sunset

5 x 7 inches - oil on gessoboard - While driving across the mountains on the big island of Hawaii, we passed a dry barren area just at sunset.  The way the mountains were lit was wonderful but it's a hard place for trees to survive.

Turtle

8 x 16 inches - oil on hardboard - Let's hope that these majestic creatures survive many more years.

Hawaian Coast

5 x 7 inches - oil on gessoboard - Where the craggy rocks come down to the pounding surf, there are many great views.

Edge of the Woods

8 x 10 inches - oil on gessoboard - This deer is not sure about coming any closer. My thanks to Robin Weiss who agreed to let me use his photo as a reference for this one.

Surf in Hawaii

10 x 10 inches - oil on hardboard - sun, sand and waves rolling in from the sea - it does not get much better than this.

Surfers

8 x 10 inches - oil on gessoboard - Hawaii seems to be a popular place to surf. Much of it is on a small scale, not the iconic huge waves with young folks taking their lives in their hands - less thrilling but as much fun.

Plumeria

5 x 7 inches - oil on gessoboard - These are common in Hawaii. Their flowers are so bright and unblemished that they almost look like porcelain.

Monkey Pod Tree

8 x 10 inches - oil on gessoboard - This distinctive tree can be found all over Hawaii.

Hawaian Shore

8 x 6 inches - oil on gessoboard - There are places along the shore where the fingers of old lava flows have left small channels. It is fascinating to watch the waves roll in filling them up and then recede again to the sea.

Jungle Chicken

6 x 6 inches - oil on gessoboard - These are not your factory chickens or even your grandmother's barnyard chickens. In Hawaii, they are wild birds like blue jays or crows.

Feral Chicken

6 x 6 inches - oil on gessoboard - Chickens are common on Hawaii. They do not get couped up but run around everywhere. To us they were endearing but I have a feeling the locals found them a bit irritating.

Hawaian Biker

9 x 12 inches - oil on gessoboard - Biking on the roads seems to be popular in Hawaii. Since the roads are mostly between the sea and the mountains, there is almost always great scenery. You often pass by old lava flows where there are tufts of grass trying to make a foothold.

Kauai Lookout

Hawaii Lookout

9 x 12 inches - oil on hardboard - If you take the road across the island of Kauai and you have good viewing weather, you will see amazing views from the lookouts on the way up.

Hanakapi'ai

8 x 6 inches - oil on gessoboard - Here is the same subject with a different approach. If you don't experiment a bit you will never find out if something else will work better for you. For some reason, I had a devil of a time with reflections when I tried to photograph this one.

Hanakapi'ai Falls

8 x 6 inches - oil on gessoboard - This is one of the falls on the damper side of the big island of Hawaii. The walk down to see it is as interesting as the falls itself.

Cutting Oil

10 x 8 inches - oil on gessoboard - I have not posted for a while because we were vacationing in Hawaii. Expect to see tropical in your future.  Meanwhile, here is one I did before leaving. There is an area near Kitchener Ontario where the farmers work 'old school', cutting out oil all together.
