On the Road from Marrakesh
8 x 10 inches - oil on linen board - this is the first in a series I am doing on a trip we made to Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. This one is a composite from photos that I took and imaginings from a trip up the mountain from Marrakesh.

Hawaiian Forest
8 x 10 inches - oil on linen board - Kauai gets a lot of rain and much of it falls on the interior and then flows to the sea via waterfalls and streams. Only the most hardy venture into the forest. I have been working on a series of paintings about Hawaii, mostly Kauai on 8 x 10 inch boards. Hawaii, because it is one of the most beautiful and interesting places I have seen. On three trips, we fell in love with the place and hope to go back some day. 8 x 10 inch boards because I find that framing is often very expensive. Using a standard size like this reduces the cost. Often framing gets assigned a greater value than the painting itself. I try not to take offense from that.

A Storm is Coming
12 x 12 inches - oil on canvas board - I used to avoid varnish because you have to wait 6 months for the paint to dry thoroughly. I recently discovered that this is a lot of 'hooey' because Gamvar breaths just enough to allow the paint to continue to dry. I occasionally would spray a temporary varnish to even the colours out but that stinks and it is a pain to do. This one could use it and I will varnish it soon.

Trout Stream in Winter
12 x 16 inches - oil on canvas board - Let's talk about painting supports. This was painted on an inexpensive yet archival canvas board because I am thrifty. I don't want to be to precious about my paintings so I go for what works for me and gives me a solid end product. I am not fond of stretched canvas except for very large paintings due to weight, and prefer a solid surface that will not flex after the paint dries. I know that I enjoy painting them and sharing them on line. Occasionally someone likes them enough to buy one which is great. So its all good. Because I am old, I have some paintings that I did more than 40 years ago that appear to be in as good shape as they were when I painted them. So I know for sure the paintings that I do now will outlast me and probably outlast anyone who buys one. Now if I get famous in 300 years after I am gone and the Louvre wants to hang one, they can pay the big bucks for a conservator to fix what is ailing with it or they can just pound sand.
Winter by the River
12 x 16 inches - oil on canvas board - I find it is safer to use canvas on larger paintings and linen or hardboard on smaller ones because there is less danger of the texture of the support interfering with the image. I don't know if that makes sense but it makes sense to me.

Yellow House in the Woods
8 x 10 inches - oil on linen board - It can be a challenge to live far from the suburbs but one good thing is there is a lot of wood available for your fireplace.

Valley in the Woods
8 x 10 inches - oil on linen board - Not far from where I live, there are places like this where you can walk quietly through the woods and listen to the wind through the trees.

Beaver by the Lake
9 x 12 inches - oil on canvas board - A sudden slap of a tail in the water is sometimes all the warning you get that a beaver is nearby.

Pile of Rocks
12 x 9 inches - oil on canvas board - These rocks appear to be stacked broken and worn down by many years of wind and sea.
Fishing Shacks
12 x 9 inches - oil on canvas board - Somewhere on the coast of Nova Scotia, the fishermen have these sheds for storing their stuff and the feral cats find their nets a cosy place to snooze.
