Retired

Oil on Gessoboard 5 x 7. I saw this dump truck while on a garden tour and took lots of photos because I knew one day I would paint it.

Calm Before the Storm

Oil on Gessoboard. 6 x 6. Himself gets a morning nap before giving his staff instructions for the day.

Waterlily

Oil on Gessoboard. 6 x 6. As it often happens, I was about ready to throw this one out the window part way through but I kept on going and I am now happy with the way it turned out.

Study for On the Lake

Oil on Gessoboard 5 x 7. I drew with a regular pencil on the board after a value sketch because the watercolour pencil was not showing up enough. Then not wanting the pencil to contaminate the paint, I coated it with acrylic medium first. I don't know what impact this might have on the long term survival of the painting but it kept the pencil from bleeding into the paint.

Glass Balls and Clementine

Oil on Gessoboard 6 x 6 An interesting exercise in reflections. I hope everyone is having a relaxing Labour Day.

Calendula

Oil on Gessoboard 6 x 6 The end of summer brings hot colours like these Calendula.

White Orchid

Oil on Gessoboard. 5 x 7  Orchids make great subjects because they are beautiful and the blooms last a long time.

Cherry Tomatoes

Oil on Gessoboard 6 x 6. Tomatoes are coming on strong now in the garden. Its hard to keep up but we are doing our best.

Wood Bowl with Grapes

Oil on canvas panel 8 x 10. I used a reference photo for this one and am fairly happy with the way it turned out. I learn something new each effort so the frequent painting of small works is paying off.

The Future is Electric

Oil on Gessoboard 6 x 6. This is an electric car from 1916 which is still running very well, proof that cars took the wrong fork in the road a long, long, long time ago. We are just now starting to get back on track.

I have not posted for a while. I have been rethinking some things with my painting and redoing my space a bit. I am having a bit of difficulty with stray reflections, both while painting and with photographing my work. When I photograph the paintings, I sometimes get reflected speckles that are not really there.

Clementines and Blueberries

SOLD - Oil on Canvas Board 6 x 8" - I think I am a little happier with the fruit in this one. I might have to keep practicing.

Blueberries and Clementines

SOLD - Oil on Canvas Board - 6 x 8" - I am not sure what these would taste like together but the colours work well against each other.

Painting Tools

Oil on Canvas board 6 x 8" - This is my contribution to the Daily Paintworks "Paint What You Paint With Challenge". When I thought about the challenge, I realized that I use my camera and computer a lot, so I included them. The hard part was doing it without my favourite tools.

Beans and Peas

Oil on Hardboard 6 x 7" - I brought in the first of the beans from the garden today as well as the last of the peas. All the peas fought valiantly to reach the house but only this one made it.

My Cup is Running Over

Oil On Hardboard 7 x 6" - I found this silver cup in my stuff. It has my initials on it so I guess my parents bought it for me when I was a child. The finish is starting to lose its luster from age. How's that for a reflection?

Big Rocks

Oil on Hardboard 6 x 8" - The Coast of Nova Scotia has some great rocks that look like huge beached whales.

The Lighthouse at Peggy's Cove

Oil on canvas board 6 x 8. Tourist places are sometimes popular for a reason. Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia is one of my favourite places. If you go there, make sure you have gingerbread and ice cream at the restaurant but make sure that you do not go to close to the shore. Regularly, tourists are swept into the sea by surprise waves.

Apple with a Cherry on Top

Oil on Hardboard 6 x 6 - Painting Cherries and Apples are rights of passage for Alla Prima painting. I haven't passed yet but I am working on it.

Daisies and Rock

6" x 7" oil on hardboard

This is one of my favourite vases. Its dark and irregular shape with a small opening lends itself to one or two small flowers. The rock was one that unfortunately hopped into our trunk as we were visiting the ocean.

Purple Iris

6" x 6" oil on hardboard

This Siberian Iris was one of the last left flowering in our garden. I snatched it while I had the chance to paint it.

Bowl of Beauty

6" x 7" oil on hardboard

This peony is actually called "Bowl of Beauty" so it seemed right to paint it this way.

Mock Orange

6" x 7" oil on hardboard

I brought a cutting from our Mock Orange in and painted it. The smell when it is flowering is amazing. I had to prune it severely this year because it was taking over its neighbours.
